I hate the Ultimate universe with a passion, because I think it did more harm than good. The whole ‘let’s keep Peter Parker a teenager forever’ started from the Ultimate universe. Those books were the ones that brought in several writers who have currently tanked Marvel, including Bendis. Kitty being paired off with every male character know to man really started with Ultimates. Both the MCU and XCU are heavily based off Ultimates, which means everything is horribly simplified and characters like Bobbi Morse being Hawkeye’s ex-wife gets cut from the narrative. Characters from the Ultimate verse are now leaking into the 616 verse; and for every well written character like Miles or Anya, there’s a dozen bad ones like Jimmy Howlett. It started the whole trend of ‘alternate universe’ characters up again after that died out in the 90’s, which is why we’re getting characters like Spider-Gwen, Old Man Logan, O5 X-Men, Gwenpool, etc… Many of the reinterpretations were terrible; Ultimate X-Men was just bad, Avengers was too grimdark and had plot points like twincest, Daredevil’s version of Elektra was just a pale comparison to Miller’s, etc. I think a big part of why Marvel is in the shape it is, lies heavily with the creation of the Ultimate universe. I know some people won’t agree but I feel like the Ultimate universe is a plight upon Marvel whose influence I wish would just go away.
