No one accuses showcasing rape survivors, theft, racism, ectera as ‘romanticizing’ these kinds of issues. So why is it that showing people in fiction struggling with mental health (especially women) there’s always an accusation of romanticization?! I’ve seen books, autobiographies, movies, and comic books delve into these issues- into the gross, unpleasant, nitty grittiness of mental health in the most blatant way possible, written by people who have experienced what they are writing about only to get accused of this. How are we supposed to talk about these issues and stereotypes in society if we’re shutting down any work that touches on that kind of subject matter? I’m not going to say I’ve always loved how certain issues like Eating Disorders, Self Harm, Depression, etcetera were handled by media; but I’d rather them be there because at least people will hopefully be talking about these issues.
