I know there were problems with the book (especially the early art continuity errors), but I loved Sam Humphries’ writing in his “Green Lanterns” run. I love his exploration of chronic anxiety with Jessica Cruz, how her PTSD/mental illness is CONSISTENT and a legitimate challenge/disability for her instead of a “she’s better in one issue” deal, because it’s more realistic this way, and we need more stories that address that. Issue 15 in particular was a funny, wrenching, beautiful exploration of how frustrating it is to live with mental illness, and portrayed so well how for some of us just getting out of bed is a victory some days. Seeing J-Bird struggle, get psychologically knocked down, and drag herself back up again through sheer Willpower, fills me with hope, and it works better than ANY other Lantern’s arc to really SHOW that “overcoming” fear isn’t the same as never feeling it. It’s beautiful writing, even if the book wasn’t perfect. I get major feels for J-Bird and I hope she sticks around for years and years.
